The Honorable Justice LEE Sang-Hoon was born in Gwangju on October 9, 1956. After passing the 19th National Judicial Examination in 1977, he was appointed as a judge in September 1983 and started his judgeship at Incheon District Court.

He served as a judge at the Seoul Eastern District Court, Daegu High Court, and Seoul High Court. He also served as Director of Judicial Policy Research at the National Court Administration, as a professor at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, as a presiding judge at Seoul Central District Court, Daejeon High Court and Seoul High Court, as Criminal Senior Presiding Judge of Seoul Central District Court, as a chief judge of Jeju District Court and Incheon District Court. He was appointed as a Supreme Court Justice on February 28, 2011 after serving as the vice minister of the National Court Administration.

While serving as Criminal Senior Presiding Judge of Seoul Central District Court, he greatly contributed to establishing criteria for issuance of detention warrants and improving the process of issuance of warrants by concentrating his efforts on instituting the principle of an oral hearing-based trial and a trial without detention. He has adjudicated disputes based on an in-depth understanding and consideration on humanity and the society as well as precise application of legal theory. For instance, he emphasized the observance of the due process by claiming that the examination report of a suspect that a prosecution administrative officer drew up by order of the prosecutor during the prosecutor’s absence could not be a competent evidence. He also ruled that the freedom of speech should be guaranteed to its utmost level, but the media must be held accountable if it exceeds the limit of permitted level.

He has authored several theses and annotations on commercial law including his doctoral thesis on Study on the Lawsuit provided in the Corporate Law against the Abuse of the Right of Majority Shareholders(1991), Comparative Legal Analysis on the Nature of the Shareholder’s General Meeting(1992), Legal Aid Insurance Contract in France(1995), Division of a Company Provided in Revised Commercial Code(1999), Legal Liability of the Director of Business Management, etc.(1999), Study on the Effect of the Rulings on the Revision of Commercial Code(2002), The Nature of the lawsuit Determining the Effectiveness of the Resolution of Shareholder’s General Meeting and the Competent Representative of a Party(2004).
