¡á Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Judiciary of Korea, the Supreme Court of Korea will hold a series of commemorative events including a ceremony, a symposium, and a special exhibition at the Supreme Court main building on September 13, 2018.

¡á This year is the 70th year since the Republic of Korea restored its judicial sovereignty. The courts will take this opportunity to enhance people’s confidence in trials and courts, as well as to ruminate over the constitutional mission bestowed by the people to the judiciary.

¡á In addition, given that the judiciary goes through the difficult times inside and out, the Court will proceed scheduled events in a calm atmosphere.

¡á [The 70th Anniversary ceremony]
¢º The ceremony will commence at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the main hall on the second floor of the Supreme Court main building. Key figures from all sectors of society, including the Chief Justice, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Chairperson of the National Election Commission, the Chairperson of Board of Audit and Inspection, Supreme Court justices, the Minister of Justice, the Chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, the Chairperson of Sentencing Commission, the President of the Korean Bar Association, and the President of the Korea Law Professors Associations, will attend the ceremony. Former Chief Justices, former justices, representatives of the people, members of courts, will also attend the ceremony. The commemorative video of the 70th Anniversary of the Judiciary of Korea will be screened before the ceremony, and a celebration speech by the Chief Justice, an award ceremony of the order of Civil Merit, and a performance of Seoul Court Complex Choir will be held.

¢º Unlike the celebration ceremony of the Korean Court’s Day had been held at the Grand Auditorium on the first floor of the Supreme Court main building in the past, the ceremony this year will take place at the main hall in front of the Grand Courtroom on the second floor, where an appointment ceremony for judges and Supreme Court justices has been held, in order for the members of courts to ruminate over the constitutional mission bestowed by the people to the judiciary and to freshen up their mind.

¢º In addition, each and every award recipient in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Judiciary is a figure who represents invaluable values the Judiciary has pursued.
- Order of Civil Merit Mugunghwa Medal (first class): Han Seung Heon, attorney-at-law (human rights) 
- Order of Civil Merit Moran Medal (second class): the late Judge Lee Young-ku (the judge’s conscience) , Professor Kim Elim (gender/ labor)
- Civil Merit Medal: Counseling commissioner for civil service, Lee Hong-yong (court official’s commitment) 

- The commemorative video in celebration of the 70th anniversary will be screened before the ceremony, and the video which contains ‘the people’s voices’ will be played during the ceremony.

¡á [A symposium in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Judiciary]
¢º A commemorative symposium will be held at the conference room 401 of the Supreme Court main building from 14:00 to 18:10 on Thursday, September 13, 2018 with the theme of ‘Justice with People.’

¢º  Presentations
- ‘Citizens’ participation in civil trials: its possibilities and limitations’ presented by Professor Kim Sang-soo of Sogang University, School of Law
- '10 years after the implementation of citizens’ participation in trials: its accomplishments and challenges’ presented by Professor Han Sang-hoon of Yonsei University, School of Law  
-'People’s Access to Justice’ presented by Mr. Choi Seung-Jae, attorney-at-law and an OECD staff member
- After the presentations, legal practitioners will discuss about and seek for the ways how to realize good trials and how to regain public trust in trials through citizens’ participation. 

¡á [A special exhibition in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Judiciary]
¢º A special exhibition will be held at the main hall on the second floor of the Supreme Court Building from September 5 to 19, 2018 with the theme of ‘The Judiciary represented through symbols’.

¡á [Other events]
¢º September 3 to 14, 2018 will be designated as the period of an open court. Accordingly, various events for communication with the people including a court tour program at each level nationwide, a work experience program, and performances, will be held.
¢º The Supreme Court of Korea will also invite people in their seventies who have shared a history of the judiciary and underprivileged children to the Supreme Court, and will provide a Supreme Court tour program.
