¡Û In the past, when Korean citizens overseas report registration of family relations (report of marriage or birth etc.) or request issuance of a certificate, report documents were sometimes lost in the process or disposition of reported cases were delayed due to difficulties in requesting applicants to supplement the report documents. Also, it took at least 1 to 3 months to dispose reported cases which caused great inconvenience for Korean citizens overseas.

¢Ã The opening of the Family Register Office for Overseas Korean, ① provided great convenience for Korean citizens residing overseas by significantly reducing the duration of disposing reported cases from 1 to 3 months to within a week with the adoption of electronic forwarding of documents.
¡Û  Electronic forwarding of documents is a system to transmit reported documents of family relation registration received by overseas Korean missions via a computerized information processing system rather than a diplomatic pouch by linking the consular services for overseas Koreans with the Supreme Court Family Relations Registration Information System.

¢Ã ② The number of overseas Korean missions which can use an authorized email has increased from 77 missions from 35 countries to 170 missions from 117 countries, allowing overseas Koreans to obtain certificates for each of the registered matters from all overseas Korean missions within a week.
¡Û Authorized emails, unlike regular emails, is a way of distributing electronic official documents based on authorized email address with much more enhanced security such as anti-forgery and anti-fabrication function.

¢Ã As disposition of family relations registration cases of overseas Koreans became swift and accurate, the number of family relations registration report cases of overseas Koreans increased more than 2.1 times to 24,992 in 2018 from 11,704 in 2014. The number of issuance of certificates for each of the registered matters has jumped 3.6 times to 351,526 in 2018 from 97,795 in 2014.

¢Ã Family relations registration report cases of overseas Koreans were previously handled by more than 1,600 offices of Si(Gu), Eup or Myeon. However, as more than 96% of such cases are concentrated in the Family Register Office, materials on foreign laws and system of personal status relations are being accumulated and so are active researches on such matter.

¢Ã Any overseas Koreans who want to report family relation registration can visit the Family Register Office for Overseas Koreans, overseas Korean missions, and relevant offices of Si(Gu), Eup or Myeon, or submit the report via a post mail. In case expeditious disposition is needed, the applicant may submit application for electronic forwarding of document to the overseas Korean mission.
