TITLE [12_19_22] Publishing Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms Used in Family Proceedings
ATTACHMENT Publishing Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms Used in Family Proceedings.docx

In legal proceedings, people who are deaf or hard of hearing and sign language interpreters have been experiencing communication difficulties without standardized expression of legal sign terminologies and due to a lack of accurate understanding of legal terms during trial proceedings.

To that extent, the National Court Administration published "Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms for Family Proceedings" this year and has published "Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms for Criminal Proceedings" and "Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms for Civil Proceedings" in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

The Glossary provides explanations on each proceeding and applicable case, and the vocabularies, phrases, and examples that are practically used in family proceedings, with detailed descriptions of important legal terms.

The volume also contains QR codes that conveniently connect to photos and video materials. The photos and QR codes in the hard copy of the Glossary enable direct access to the web pages of video materials of the sign gestures.

The judiciary expects that the Glossary will assist the people who are deaf or hard of hearing and sign language interpreters to accurately understand legal terminologies, which will further enhance effective communication and help a person who is deaf or hard of hearing to exercise their rights during judicial proceedings better.

The National Court Administration plans to publish "Sign Language Glossary of Legal Terms for Administrative Proceedings" next year.
