¢Ã On December 14, 2018, Minister AHN Chul-sang came back after a 7 day business trip to the US, visiting the US Supreme Court and other institutions under the US judiciary.
¢Ã Minister AHN met with Chief Justice John Roberts of the US Supreme Court on December 10, 2018.
- Minister AHN and Chief Justice Roberts discussed matters of mutual interests including judicial administration system and the method of operating the system during an hour-long meeting.
* Chief Justice Roberts is the ex officio Chair of the Judicial Conference of the US, which makes decisions on judicial administration of the US judiciary.
¢Ã Minister AHN began the official meeting with Chief Justice Roberts, followed by heads of major institutions of the US judiciary.
-Meeting with Chief Judge Merrick Garland of the US Court of Appeal for the DC Circuit on December 10, 2018.
* Chief Judge Garland is the Chair of the Executive Committee, the essential committee of the Judicial Conference of the US.
- Meeting with Director John Cooke of the Federal Judicial Center (FJC) on December 11, 2018
* FJC is an institution whose main function is conducting researches on the US judiciary and training judges
- Meeting with Mr. James Duff, Director of the Administrative Office of the US Courts (AO) on December 12, 2018
* AO is an institution that executes decisions of the Judicial Conference of the US on matters of judicial administration such as court administration, budget, and legislative affairs under the supervision of the Judicial Conference of the US.
¢Ã Minister AHN’s official visit to the US Supreme Court and other crucial institutions of the US judiciary is significant in that: (i) Justice Ahn was able to observe firsthand how the US judicial administration is practiced amid the ongoing discussion at home on improving the system of judicial administration; (ii) as it was the first time in 11 years since Justice KIM Hwang-sik paid a courtesy call on the US Chief Justice in 2007, Justice AHN’s visit to the US Supreme Court this time has paved the way to resume bilateral judicial exchanges at the highest level and to further expand mutual cooperation going forward.
